Community Church Hornsby (CCH) had been an ongoing supporter of missions & NGO’s in India for many years. With the growing number of people in the Hornsby community from the Indian sub-continent, church leadership were keen to reach out to those of an Indian background closer to home.
In 2017 Derek & Teela Mah made it their mission to meet with local council leaders & those heading up organisations of cross-cultural & Indian interest to understand what was available in the local area & what were the perceived needs. Armed with this information they gathered with CCH leadership and from this meeting the “Chai & Chat” concept was born…a local initiative, that encouraged people of any background to come & learn Hindi & celebrate Indian culture whilst offering those fluent with the Hindi language an opportunity to offer their voluntary services in tutoring & teaching.
Weekly group sessions commenced in 2018 & by 2019 CCH Chai & Chat included an active on-line community, fun events & meaningful fundraising to involve the whole family.
Teela Mah is of an Anglo-Indian background & her husband Derek is equally passionate about all things Indian. Both have traveled extensively in India.
